The same idea as the FT-65R — one long numbered Set Mode list — but with its own numbering and its own abbreviations.
This page covers: Yaesu FT-4XR, Yaesu FT-4XE, Yaesu FT-4VR, Yaesu FT-4VE. They share the same firmware, so the steps below are identical on all of them whatever name is printed on the front.
Not the same numbers as the FT-65R
The FT-65R is the obvious comparison and the numbers do not carry across. Repeater shift is 31 RPT.SFT here; on the FT-65R the whole repeater section is one item, 24 REPEATER, with sub-settings inside it.

Save a repeater to a memory channel on an FT-4XR
Same shape as its bigger brother the FT-65R, with different numbers. Set the frequency and tone, then hold one key twice.
Have these to hand before you start
- The repeater's output frequency.
- Its tone, if it uses one.
- Press V/M until you are in VFO mode.V/MThe screen should show: A frequency rather than a channel number.
- Type the repeater's output frequency.type 147.080
- Hold the Function key to open Set Mode, arrow to 36 SQL.TYP, and set it to TONE.hold F›▲▼ 36 SQL.TYP›▲▼ TONE›PTTThe screen should show: SQL.TYP, then TONE.Watch out. On the FT-65R this same setting is number 29 and spelled SQL TYPE. The two radios are sold alongside each other and share nothing useful about their menus.

- Hold V/M — a blank channel appears. Arrow to the one you want, then hold V/M again.hold V/M›▲▼ a channel›hold V/MThe screen should show: The radio beeps and the memory is saved.Watch out. The same key, held twice. The first hold opens the write and the second commits it.
There is room for a name before that second hold — the number keys cycle through letters like an old phone keypad, and the Function key moves the cursor along.

Set the transmit tone (CTCSS / PL) on an FT-4XR
- Hold the Function key, arrow to 36 SQL.TYP, and choose TONE.hold F›▲▼ 36 SQL.TYP›▲▼ TONE›PTTThe screen should show: SQL.TYP, then TONE.

TONE transmits the tone and lets you hear everything. The other options on 36 also mute the receiver, which is a different job and the usual cause of a radio that has gone mysteriously silent.

Set the offset direction and amount on an FT-4XR
Three separate Set Mode items, and they sit together in the twenties and thirties.
- Hold the Function key, arrow to 29 RPT.ARS, and turn it off.hold F›▲▼ 29 RPT.ARS›▲▼ ARS.OFF›PTTThe screen should show: RPT.ARS, then ARS.OFF.Automatic shift overrides anything you set by hand, so it has to go first.
- Then 31 RPT.SFT for the direction.hold F›▲▼ 31 RPT.SFT›▲▼ +RPT or −RPT›PTTThe screen should show: RPT.SFT, then your choice.

Turn 29 RPT.ARS back on when you are done if you want the radio handling ordinary repeaters again.

Change the transmit power on an FT-4XR
- Hold the Function key, arrow to 40 TX PWR, and choose a level.hold F›▲▼ 40 TX PWR›▲▼ HIGH, MID or LOW›PTTThe screen should show: TX PWR, then your choice.
HIGH is 5 watts, MID 2.5, LOW 0.5. On a handheld the difference between 5 watts and half a watt is about one S-unit at the far end and roughly ten times the battery drain, so if the repeater is hearing you cleanly on LOW there is nothing to gain by going up.

Delete a memory channel on an FT-4XR
- Hold the Function key, arrow to 20 MEM.DEL, and pick the channel to remove.hold F›▲▼ 20 MEM.DEL›▲▼ the channel›PTTThe screen should show: MEM.DEL, then the channel number.
Channel 1 cannot be deleted on these radios — it can only be overwritten. That is by design, not a fault.

Lock the keypad on an FT-4XR
- Hold the Function key, arrow to 18 LOCK, and choose what to lock.hold F›▲▼ 18 LOCK›▲▼ LK KEY, LK PTT or LK K+P›PTTThe screen should show: LOCK, then your choice.
LK KEY locks the keypad only, which still leaves the transmit button live in a bag. LK K+P locks both and is the one worth using if the radio travels.

These are honestly missing rather than hidden. Nothing goes on this page until it has been checked on the radio itself, and guessing at a keystroke is exactly the failure these pages exist to avoid.
